Introduction

Science is an important core subject and an essential preparation for life in the 21scentury.

Our main aim as a department is to make Science interesting and enjoyable and to ensure that you achieve your highest possible level of attainment.

Science qualifications are held in high esteem by many employers and can lead to rewarding careers in medical and veterinary sciences, microbiology, pharmacy, engineering and education.

Topics of Study

  • Science A and Additional Science (2 GCSE certificates)
  • Triple Science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics (3 GCSE certificates)
  • BTEC First in Applied Science (equivalent to 2 GCSE certificates)
    available to selected candidates

These courses will follow the AQA Science framework and consist of equal amounts of Biology, Chemistry and Physics taught in separate modules. Science A will be certified and examined in Year 10. Additional Science will be certified and examined in Year 11.

You will learn to:

  • Develop a critical approach to scientific evidence and methods
  • Acquire and apply skills, knowledge and understanding of how science works
    and its essential role in society
  • Acquire scientific skills, knowledge and understanding necessary for
    progression to further learning.

    There is a choice between three levels of entry:

      Science A Additional Science BTEC Applied Science
    Terminal Examinations 3 Linear Examinations (25%) 3 Linear Examinations (25% each) N/A
    Internal Assessment 1 Controlled Assessment (25%) 1 Controlled Assessment (25%) Portfolio work (100%)

    Your child’s teacher will advise as to which level of examination your child should enter. Assessment for all levels of entry is by modular tests and terminal examination.
