Introduction to the Welsh Department

The Welsh Department at Ebbw Fawr Learning Community is a successful and vibrant department. It carries on the good work carried out in the cluster Primary schools helping pupils to further develop their skills of oracy, reading and writing.

At Key Stage 3, pupils develop their communication skills through the medium of Welsh, such as their square mile (y Filltir Sgwâr), friends (Ffrindiau) hobbies (Hobiau) and living healthily (Byw’n iach). Studying the Welsh language gives pupils an opportunity to develop a passion for their heritage, culture and customs.

As well as holding an Eisteddfod to celebrate St David’s Day, pupils are given the opportunity to attend the Urdd camps at LLangrannog (West Wales) and Glan Llyn (Bala, North Wales) for years 7 and 8 respectively. This allows them to participate in adventure activities and develop their day to day usage of the Welsh Language.
