Design & Technology Department

Introduction

The Design & Technology (DT) Department at Ebbw Fawr Learning Community is an enriched, lively and stimulating environment where pupils learn and develop an array of techniques in design and crafts. It is a far-reaching subject and incorporates skills in areas such as problem solving, drawing, ICT and mathematics. Pupils are encouraged to discuss and debate in class important economic, environmental and social issues relating to the subject.

In Design & Technology, you will learn an array of essential life skills:

  • Understand the needs of a customer and design products to meet these needs;
  • Research information from a range of sources to aid in understanding problems and solving them;
  • Use a range of manufacturing methods and equipment both traditional and modern to manufacture high quality outcomes efficiently and safely;
  • Be critical of information, methods and products in order to improve outcomes and products;
  • Use a range of ICT equipment and skills to design and manufacture outcomes;

Why study Design & Technology?

Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. It actively promotes the creativity and well-being of pupils, and it teaches them how to take risks and so become more resourceful, innovative and enterprising.

Pupils develop a critical understanding of the impact of design and technology on daily life and the wider world. Additionally, DT provides excellent opportunities for pupils to develop and apply value judgements of an aesthetic, economic and technical nature both in their own design work and when evaluating the work of others. It is perhaps one of the most all-embracing subjects on offer at the school.

The production and use of resources is one of the main themes of the course, and the course itself is based on a problem-solving approach; the solution is realised in its entirety, as a product.

Studying DT can lead on to a wide range of rewarding degree courses such as architecture, engineering, computer design, education/teaching/college or university lecturing, industrial design and product design. All of these professions are ideally suited to the person who wants a creative, imaginative and technically challenging career with excellent prospects.

Courses

At Key Stage 3, our learners are given opportunities to build on skills, knowledge and understanding acquired at Key Stage 2. They design familiar items that draw upon a range of skills and practical processes, and manufacture quality products that meet the needs of the target user. Focus areas include Resistant Materials, Product Design, Systems and Control and Food and Textiles, and learners use handcraft skills and CAD CAM to create their final proposals.

At Key Stage 4, our learners are given the option to take Design & Technology as a GCSE. There are two qualifications which we currently offer; GCSE Product Design & Vocational BTEC qualification in Construction.

Resources

Learners have access to two fully equipped workshops, equipped with state of the art technology including 2x laser cutters, 1x plasma cutter, CAD/CAM cutters and a suite of computers.
