South East Wales County Netball Tournament

The Year 9 girls competed in the prestigious county netball tournament at Caldicot Comprehensive School 5th March 2013. As always the competition was highly anticipated with a total of 25 schools entering. Each game comprised of 7 minutes and with only a short time to impress – the girls were on top form from the minute they stepped on the court.

They started the tournament well with Katie Williams opening their scoring early on thanks to a quick interception and turnover by Holly Dobbs. Within minutes Ebbw Fawr had built up a tidy lead thanks to a number of missed chances by a strong Gwynllyw who were finding it hard to deal with the pressure in defence (Charlotte Godding and Maria Roszkowska). The final score was 5 -2.

A quicker paced second game allowed several unforced errors by Ebbw Fawr awarding St Alban’s a 2 goal advantage. Thankfully goal shooter Kelsea Morgan was able to regain some composure allowing the girls a fantastic come back shocking their opponents with their relentless attacking tactics, eventually winning 5-2.

The girls dominated their final group game against a mature Fairwater conceding only 1 goal, with excellent centre court play from Lucy Jones and Holly, which made for smoothly timed passes into the circle where Katie was able to successfully convert 4 goals.
With their heads held high they battled through the group winners stages, with convincing wins against Rougemont, Bassaleg and Newbridge. With 15 points on the board it was all down to the St Joseph’s match. There was some fine work from Lucy and Holly providing some inspirational feeds to the attacking unit. However, Katie and Kelsea couldn’t seem to get the ball in the net and the rebounded ball travelled up and down the court. It was an exciting match between the two teams, where they all played their part and gave their all but couldn’t get the result they deserved, with the final score 4 – 0 to St Joseph’s.

Overall, the girls finished in a very impressive third place with only one point separating the top three. The girls have had an excellent season with Holly, Maria, Katie, Lucy, Chloe and Charlotte being selected for the district squad. We are very much looking forward to the year 10 league and have a very good chance of following in the footsteps of this years successful year 10 team. Watch this space!!
