Over 40 parents of students in Yrs. 9-11 at Ebbw Fawr Learning Community returned to the classroom this week as part of a drive to improve parental involvement in learning. The parents were taught how the brain works and how to help students revise using a range of different techniques such as mind mapping, word association and planning revision timetables.

“The session was great fun and hopefully helped parents to help their child prior to examinations later this year. This is the first of our parent learning sessions and we are delighted to see such a positive response”

Earlier in the day students in Year 11 who have examinations later this year had similar sessions to teach them how to plan and prepare for the examinations. This was part of a structured programme to raise motivation and aspirations which have included a range of outside speakers, interviews with senior staff to discuss progress and more formal parent’s evenings.

“We remain focused on driving up educational standards here but have shown students that learning can be fun but it does needs to be structured and planned.”
