History Department

Introduction

History is offered at all levels at the Ebbw Fawr Learning Community and is an extremely popular choice at Key Stage 4, where we have a long record of examination success at GCSE.

All pupils take History up to Year 9 and have the option of taking GCSE in Years 10 and 11. Pupils then have the opportunity to study History at further education as an A-Level.

In this subject, you will learn a multitude of key skills:

  • Interpret and evaluate pieces of information (sources);
  • An understanding of the contexts in which texts are written;
  • How to describe and analyse the key features of the period studied;
  • Use critical thinking and problem solving;
  • The value of human relationships;
  • The nature of human experience;
  • Social, moral and ethical values;

If you want to develop analytical skills to enhance further career prospects then this is the subject for you. History provides an opportunity to learn about your past and its influence on the present and the future.

Key skills learnt through History can be applied to all sorts of other situations demonstrating that you are able to communicate clearly and have the ability to express yourself verbally, and on paper.

Field-trips & Historical Visits

The History department  at Ebbw Fawr runs at least one field trip for each teaching group per academic year. These historical visits include studying the development of local historical sites across South Wales; trips to iconic Welsh monuments and castles.

The History department  in recent years organise trips to Holland & Germany to visit historical sites of importance, including visits to Auschwitz, to learn of the barbaric history and war crimes of  the rise and demise of Nazi regime along with World War II memorial and battle sites such as Mametz woods. We believe that historical visits and field trips are a vital part of a child’s education when learning about the past.
